Stephanie Barbone, DHSc, OTR/L, CHT, alum of the GW Doctor of Health Sciences program and adjunct instructor for the GW OTD program, is serving as a consultant on the inaugural Hand in Hand Grant worth $50,000 to support a research study alongside Sarah Doerrer, PhD, OTR/L, CHT, CLT, an assistant professor at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
The Hand in Hand Grant was awarded collectively by the American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF), the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT), and the American Hand Therapy Foundation (AHTF) for the “"Más Fuerte (Stronger): Exploring the Role of Spanish-Language Video Education in Distal Radius Fracture Recovery” study. The funds will support research aimed at improving clinical outcomes for diverse patient populations recovering from hand and upper extremity injuries. Barbone will be assisting with conducting interviews, analyzing data, and developing videos.
This qualitative research study focuses on developing culturally relevant and useful video education for Spanish speaking patients recovering from a distal radius fracture (DRF). Working out of the GW Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) orthopaedic clinic and the Arlington Free Clinic, the research team will interview clinicians and patients in the community to develop free online resources that are evidence-based and culturally-relevant to patients’ daily activities.
Sam Moghtaderi, MD, assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, and program director for Orthopaedic Surgery Residency, is a co-investigator of the research study and will be recruiting patients for the research study. Carlos Velasquez will collaborate on the research as the film production manager.
